John Keells awards scholarships to Moratuwa undergraduates

John Keells Social Responsibility Foundation launched a scheme to grant scholarships to students reading for an Honours degree of Bachelor of Science in Transport and Logistics Management (BSc (T&LM) Hons.) at a ceremony held recently at the Cinnamon Grand.

John Keells Holdings PLC, Romesh David, President, Transportation and IT Groups, commented, "JKH is delighted to have found a partner as responsive and proactive as we are in the University of Moratuwa.

In addition to fully sponsoring both the English language programme and the mentoring programme for all first year under graduates, JKH have undertaken to award scholarships to students in all four years of the degree program.

For students in the first year we offer up to 5 scholarships based on economic need. In the second, third and fourth years we award in each year 7 scholarships to the students based on academic excellence and involvement in extra curricular activities.

When all four batches are in place this will amount to a total of 26 scholarships a year! Additionally, we have made a commitment to place at least 5 students from each graduating batch in a John Keells Group company."

The inaugural awards ceremony for the John Keells Holdings English Language Programme for the undergraduates was also held at this event.

Fifty students came forward to receive their awards at a ceremony that recognised their value and marked a stepping-stone towards their lives as world-class professionals in their chosen industry.

The English language programme that had served to enhance their capabilities had been arranged and implemented by the Transportation Group of John Keells Holdings PLC, through the John Keells Social Responsibility Foundation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Malik Ranasinghe, Vice Chancellor, University of Moratuwa, said, "I am extremely impressed by the commitment show by John Keells Holdings towards the Transport and Logistics Management degree programme."

The 4-year, undergraduate honours degree programme in Transport and Logistics Management (BSc (T&LM) Hons) at the University of Moratuwa was commenced in 2006.

The programme of study was designed to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to equip undergraduate students to face the modern day challenges of a career in management with specialisation in the fields of Aviation, Shipping, Logistics and Supply Chain Management or Public Transport.
